Decorative Arts Highlighting the Lap of Luxury

The brilliance of Murano and Steuben art glass contrasts with fine bronze and spelter figures in this week’s curated decorative arts auction. Take a look at six stand out pieces in this collection.

The auction opens with Steuben glass that includes a rare 10-inch Art Deco vase of blue Aurene over yellow jade glass, shape #8491, which is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Murano selections include the affordable Sommerso hand-blown jar decanter in smoky blue, which changes color under fluorescent light. The jar is in the manner of the Cenedese company.

Elegant glassware in the sale includes a German Art Nouveau liqueur set containing a decanter, four glasses and a matching silver tray.

A signed Pierre Chenet bronze figure of a charging bull is signed ‘P. Chenet’ and likely from the 20th century.

Also estimated at $1,000-$1,500 is a Eugene Marioton spelter sculpture of a woman, which is titled La Reconnaissance est le souvenier du bienfait (translated: Gratitude is the recollection of kindness). The signed figure dates to the 1890s.

Another affordable lot in the sale consists of two hand-painted Clyde Edward Gray (Texas/Illinois, 1907-1989), two signed painted porcelain tiles.

How to Set Your Table in High Style

Elegant crystal and porcelain from the finest European makers are featured in this highly curated collection. You’re destined to find an item or two (or three!) to glam up your home decor.

Stunning in cobalt blue is a set of six champagne flutes by Saint Louis of France. The glasses, which stand over 9 inches high, feature hand-cut “bubbles” on the side.

Murano art glass is well represented in the auction, topped by a tall Dino Martens “Bianca Nera” vase, which was developed in 1954 for Aureliano Toso.

Standing at nearly a foot tall, this Gustave Gillot bronze sculpture of a woman and a fox has the auction’s high estimate at $1,000-$1,500.

A nice selection of beautifully painted plates is in the auction, including an ornate pair of Limoges cabinet plate. One depicts a courting scene while the other depicts a trio of women attending another woman.

A 19th-century hand-painted Sevres plate that pictures a young couple and a monk has an iridescent teal border and scalloped rim decorated in raised floral gilt. It is marked Sevres on the reverse.

American Decorative Arts With a Touch of Spice

Variety is the spice of life. And this week’s American Decorative Arts and Paintings sale is the spice cabinet for your life. Filled with American objects that delight with their elegant simplicity, this auction features a variety of paintings, American art glass, Folk Art & Advertising wares to add whimsy and elegance to your home. Take a look at a few standouts from this curated collection.

The auction catalog features two paintings by the Indiana artist Homer G. Davisson (1866-1957). Davisson studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Art Students League, New York City; and the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. He exhibited his primarily pastoral landscapes at the Hoosier Salon, Swope Art Gallery, Fort Wayne Art Museum, and the Indiana Artists’ Club. Known for his impressionist landscapes, Davisson regularly summered in Nashville, Indiana, where he became a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association in 1926. Featured in this auction are The Rockribbed Hills and The Pond.

Egyptian-born artist Maher Morcos is equally adept at portraying scenes from the Middle East as he is the Old West. His 1982 bronze sculpture titled The Fate of the Scout featured in the auction is numbered 7 out of 18.

An Art Deco porcelain demitasse or espresso set in this sale was made in Germany by Rosenthal in 1930. This beautiful set is decorated in a stylized floral design and accented with gold trim.

Paintings of pastel-colored landscapes epitomize the opulence of 19th century Europe. Regional Center, a painting by Russian artist Pavel Erovikov, shows a view of a rural town. The large oil on canvas has a $3,500-$5,000 estimate.

The Neoclassical style bronze group Two Goddesses, attributed to French sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger, dates to the 1870s.

An outstanding example of 1920s Meissen porcelain is an 11-inch-tall figure of a seated nobleman. It was created by Paul Scheurich (1883-1945), who is regarded as one of the greatest modelers of the 20th century.

Fine porcelain tableware is also featured in the auction such as a valuable Flora Danica tureen by Royal Copenhagen.

Continental modern art glass is highlighted by a Picasso-designed Murano Fucina Degli Angeli vase that stands about 15 1/2 inches tall.

Also originating from the glass masters of Murano, Italy, but in stark contrast, is a vase designed by Carlo Scarpa in 1940 and produced by Venini.
